What is a Risk Assessment

What is a Risk Assessment?

For many, these words strike fear in their heart. It sounds like something really difficult.

In reality, it’s simple. You just need to look carefully at your workplace to see what, if anything, could endanger your employees or clients or your visitors. These are commonly known as hazards. Some are more obvious than others.

A hazard is something that could cause harm. Potential hazards include electricity, ladders, open drawers, a pot-hole, a wet floor...

Most of these are encountered every day without any problems. However, there is also the risk that someone or something untowards might happen.

A risk is the chance that damage to a person or thing might be caused by one of these. Risk assessment will gauge the probability of an accident happening and also show how serious the damage could be.

Then you have to gauge whether you have taken enough precautions to ensure safety. You are not expected to eliminate all risk – that would be totally unrealistic – but you should take reasonable steps to protect people wherever possible.

Everyone has the right to be protected from harm. If an accident happens because you have not taken reasonable measures, you could be in serious trouble.

An accident is when probability becomes reality and someone, for example, falls from a ladder, trips in a pothole or slips on a wet floor.

If they’re not hurt, you might get off lightly. But the consequences could be serious. Ensuing costs, including possible compensation and bad publicity, could force the closure of your business.

The thought should make you see a risk assessment as an easy option. And it can be. To find out more about how to keep ‘on the right side of the law’, call Paul Craythorne Associates...
