Occupational Health Surveillance

Why Occupational Health Surveillance?

safety clothes

Occupational health surveillance is used where people work with hazardous substances. It is designed to detect ill health that might be caused by exposure to such substances in the workplace.

Information about employees’ health will be collected and examined for early signs of illness. This may, for example, help prevent asthma developing.

Occupational Health Surveillance is NOT Health Screening

Surveillance is NOT the same as health screening and should never take the place of proper control of exposure.

asbestos

It should be in place when a hazardous substance is linked to any identifiable disease or there is a chance of someone being adversely affected by any conditions at work.

Examples of these might include allergens (eg latex) or toxic metals (eg mercury) or a risk of disease (eg hepatitis B).

If a problem is identified, the person, their work practices and/or their workplace may need to be assessed. Efforts should be made to try and maintain their employment.

However, sometimes it’s not practicable to modify work practices or environment so the person might need to change what they do. This is not always possible.

You can see that this is a complex area, one that definitely requires professional input. Paul Craythorne Associates are well-qualified to guide you through this particular maze.
