Course on Manual Handling
Employers and Employees Manual Handling Responsibilities
Manual Handling means the moving or supporting of loads by hand or by bodily force. Knowing how to do this properly has increasing significance these days. Over a third of all over-three-day injuries reported each year are due to ignorance about the proper way to do this.
Injuries can occur wherever people work – hospitals are not any safer than building sites in this regard. Heavy manual labour and awkward postures, previous or existing injury are all contributory factors.
As an employer, you need to consider the risks to the health and safety of your employees. You should assess any risk and reduce the likelihood of an accident happening.
Employees have responsibilities too!
The responsibility does not all rest with the employer. Employees have their part to play too. They should use equipment provided for their safety and they should take care not to put others at risk.
Basically, employers must provide proper equipment for the jobs to be done. Employees have a duty to use equipment as it is intended. Employers should see that they do.
Huge amounts of money are lost due to injuries at work associated with incorrect manual handling. These are usually unnecessary losses that could be greatly reduced by proper training and effective risk assessments.
Prevention must be priority
Prevention of injury must be a priority for businesses – and not just because of lost days at work. People may be entitled to compensation, sometimes significant amounts, if their employer can be shown to have been negligent.
Don’t let this happen to you.
